Baseball
Alexandre Alves, Cabin 14
Baseball, in my opinion, is the best sport out there. Hence the reason is was properly named America's pastime. Yet, it it's glory, the sport still has some noticeable flaws which are getting more prominent with each passing day. Just like a fishing rod; if you try to cast with a tangle the tangle gets worse. Play ball. I'll start with a dense cloud that has been looming over the baseball world for quite some time now: performance enhancing drugs and steroid abuse. The cloud was at its highest point after Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs in one year, passing Mark McGuire, who had 70. A few years later, Mark McGuire in addition to many other baseball stars admitted to taking steroids. This left a dark aura over Barry Bonds, for earlier in his career he hit no where near that many. Back in the old days, around 1920, it was about the time of the dead ball era. In those years, one baseball lasted the whole game, while now one baseball lasts 6-8 pitches. Also, trades were a good player for another good player, but now a rich team can buy whoever they want, and all the other teams get are a few minor leaguers.
Basketball
Darren Kasoff, Cabin 1
I love basketball because it is a great game to play with your friends. It does not matter if you win or lose. It matters if you're having fun. It is hard work playing basketball but you will get used to it. Once when you get used to it you will be playing better people, and that is the only way you will get better. If you are really good you could get in the NBA, but I don't think you are going in the NBA because you need to be really god at basketball to get to the NBA. I am Darren Kasoff, and this is my story.
Nature: A Great New Discovery
Chris Brandt, WS
Of all the three years I've been going to this camp, never have I taken Nature. It seemed very interesting and fun to learn about the many cool kinds of animals an plants near Camp Shohola. I always wanted to try new activities, but I never took nature. Many great things were said about it and in addition to that, fun trips were conducted twice every week. For example, going to Waterfalls, lakes, parks etc. This being my last year as a camper, I decided to take nature as an activity. My first nature class I learned that nature can also be a class for more creative thinkers at camp. It is also very relaxing and peaceful which allows me to be myself. My favorite aspect of nature is that you don't need to be a superstar to enjoy nature. Overall, nature is a great learning experience. Whether it is from hiking the camp nature trail, catching crayfish in the creek, or best if all learning about strange plants like the tea berry, nature will be one of my best memories from the summer of 2006.
Soccer Game
Jeremy Weinstock and Cory Rich, Cabin 6, and Timi Opeke, Cabin 8
This week on the soccer field, there was an 11-under soccer game against NJY. We were not sure if we could win since our 2 best soccer players went home. That did no matter since the Mexicans took over. We scored the first goal because of an amazing pass. Our two defense men stopped a hard kick from NJY. The second goal was by an amazing header. Since we got too cocky, NJY finally scored because one of their players ran out of bounds with out the ref seeing it, and passed it to a player who then kicked it in. We answered back with a pass that was kicked over the goalie. We scored again on a breakaway. We thought they were not going to score anymore, but they did. On a corner kick they kicked it to their best player who scored. We then scored by a penalty kick from our hardest kicker. We won because of good effort and good coaching. The final score was 5-2 us.
Top 5 Activities at Camp Shohola
Adam Buys, cabin 5
1. Any Water sport
All water sports are great. From sailing to canoing, being in the water is refreshing and fun, no matter what activity you are in.
2. Any Land sport
With so many land sports, it's impossible to choose. From basketball to tennis, they're all fun.
3. Ropes
Ropes is one of the most fun classes to choose. The rock walls and the zip lines are so much fun, and are so challenging.
4. Silver shop or Wood shop
Silver shop and wood shop are a ton of fun, from making a sword to creating a ring.
5. Radio Broadcasting
Radio is just a plain old great class. To have your own radio show for a class period is a great feeling.
Outdoor Cooking
by Chris Kelsh, WS
The sound of hot dogs sizzling, the smell of marshmallows roasting, and the crisp, fresh taste of barbecued shrimp. All of the best food from hot pockets to banana boats. Outdoor cooking is a great experience, and is a lot of fun. Even if awesome food is not what you want from camp, you can chill with George and Curcio by the fire.
Flash
Nick Stallone, Cabin 7
I like all the classes at Shohola, but my favorite is flash. In flash you can make little movies on the computer. It was hard to get used to using the flash program, but once you get the hang of it, it can be very fun. I am very glad that I took flash this year.
Radio
Nick Mower, Cabin 8
Radio is a lot of fun because if you are a DJ, you can go on the air and be listened to all over camp. There are four classes. Fourth, third, second, and first. Fourth is when you can only do a radio show with a first class DJ. A third class DJ is when you can only do a radio show with a second class DJ or a first class DJ. Second class is way up on the rankings because they are allowed to do a radio show with another second class DJ or a first class DJ, If you are a first class DJ, you are pretty much the best of the best in camp. First class is allowed to do a radio show all by themselves. If you take radio and have a lot of practice, then maybe you might turn the air switch in the right position.
Water Skiing
Andrew Dykman, Cabin 5
I like water skiing. You can two ski, which is easy. Just don't try to stand up or pull the rope. Then there's slalom. Just lean back and keep every thing straight. Then there is wake boarding. When wake boarding you need to start facing the boat and turn sideways when it starts to move.
Rugby
David Wilson, WS
Back home, I would never have gotten to play Rugby. Rugby is a great sport that has been a lot of fun. It is interesting learning a whole new sport. The most important thing in Rugby is teamwork. A lot of sports can be won by a single good player of the team, but rugby is not like that. To be a good rugby player, you also have to be thinking at all times. A lot of people get the impression that rugby is just a simple tackle the guy with the ball game, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Taking rugby was one of my best choices this summer.
Wood shop
Miguel Pallares, cabin 7
In wood shop, there is a magical feeling when you just get inside. The way you cut the wood and make it take form such as tank, an airplane, or other things is incredible. I love wood shop and the smell of wood. That is the magic that makes your dreams, in a piece of wood.
Rocketry
Rafael Pallares, Cabin 1
Rocketry is very good because when you throw your rocket is very fun but sometimes you lose your rocket but sometimes you get your rocket again because when the rocket fly and he come back to the floor so sometimes they go to the tree but sometimes they come back to the floor and you get your rocket.
Web Design
Victor Honore and Timi Opeke, Cabin 8, and Michael Wilmore, Cabin 9
Web Design was a really fun class this year because we were able to put our websites on line. We went on line and found games, videos, etc. and were able to link them on our websites. Paul is a great teacher for web design. We finally put our websites on Angelfire - a free website host. Our websites are www.angelfire.com/princetonfiesta and www.angelfire.com/punk/sk8_or_die.
Riflery
Michael Wilmore, Cabin 9
Riflery class this year was awesome. We got to shoot targets, and my best score was 27. We also got to shoot other stuff like cans and apples. I didn't get to shoot my shirt, but I got to shoot my hat which was pretty cool. Turtle let us shoot his book and we completely ripped it up. He also found a cardboard cereal box and we shot that as well. I also met a lot of new kids and made new friends. I think riflery class was great.
Lacrosse
Jake Berman and Scott Perkins, Cabin 14
Lacrosse is the best sport around. I'm glad they have lacrosse at camp. I wish there were more lacrosse games in Pike County. We have only had one so far, and we lost it. The one thing I wish was at Shohola were more lacrosse players.
Roller Hockey
Devin Rinaldi, Cabin 7
Roller hockey is fun because the people at this camp... well some of them... are good. So it's hard for me to beat them. One guy who I shard is Alex Steinberg, who left a little while ago. They both play ice hockey and roller hockey. I've played ice hockey for a long time.
Silver shop
Eric Vogt Cabin 8
Silver shop is my favorite activity. In silver shop you can make whatever you want. Rings, spoons, and much more. In silver shop you experience in using many metal crafting tools. My favorite is the blow torch. You can soften metal and melt metal with the blow torch. If you're looking for an activity, choose silver shop.
Sailing
David Wilson, WS
Sailing is a very enjoyable activity to participate in. It is very interesting because you rarely get the opportunity to sail outside of camp. For the first few classes, you learn the basics, but after that you are essentially free to roam about our portion of the lake as you please. When the wind whips up the lake into a frenzy is the best time to go sailing. If you venture out in those conditions, you can go very fast, just be wary so you don't fall out. Sailing is one of the most enjoyable activities that I've taken at Camp Shohola.
Infirmary
Nick Mower, Cabin 8
I can't believe I get to write the infirmary article! I love the nurses! Every time I get hurt, I get better due to the nurses. Also, when I need my medications, where do I go? You betcha, the nurse! And, when someone is feeling homesick, the nurses are always there to be their best and greatest friends. That is why I love the nurses. Hooray for Nurses!
Laundry
David Wilson, WS
Picking up all of your clean clothes after a busy and eventful week is always a welcome relief. The laundry ladies this year have done an outstanding job. Having to deal with laundry from an all boys camp every day for two months can be hard to say the least. We all owe the laundry ladies a great deal of thankfulness because without them, we would all be smelling awful by now.
My Sprained Ankle
Billy Roy, Cabin 14
I sprained my ankle in paint ball. That is the answer to the question I have been asked many times this month. In the game, I was running around the back of the field. While I was running, there were many holes I had to dodge. Then I started to get shot at, so I looked up and started to shoot back, not paying attention to where I was stepping. Then, at full speed, I stepped in a hole and bent my ankle until my toe touched my shin. I was down for about 5 minutes, then I got back up and played again. It was me against 3 of my friends, and even with a sprained ankle I still won.
Mystery Marathon
Glen Kasoff, Cabin 5
My favorite event at Camp Shohola has got to be the green and white competition. I like the apache race, capture the flag, and swim meet, however, the mystery marathon is my favorite. At the mystery marathon, each counselor has a nickname and every five minutes they say nicknames on the radio and you can ask counselors if it is their nickname or not. Also there are objects hidden around camp that are worth certain amounts of points. On the radio they give hints as to where they are hidden. I hope you have fun at the mystery marathon.
Green and White
Sam Donnenfeld, Cabin 15
All the green and white events are great. Every time the two sides clash, total Shohola spirit is at a maximum. Everyone loves every event, and even though one side loses, it is always fun.
Green and White Horse Show
Lucas Muller, Counselor
Somewhere in the West, a cowboy in a full-fledged outfit rode off into the sunset after a hard days work. But here in the sunny Greeley, PA, the horsemen were putting their skills to the test. Events like barrel races and around the world and even a blindfolded relay race pushed contestants to the edge. Accompanied by spectator events such as apple bobbing and hay bale races, the green and white horse show proved to be an exciting event for all. DJ Fleish added to the ecstatic environment with his music and dance competitions. The Green and White spirit at this year's horse show far out did that of any past year. This was unquestionably due to the effort put forth by Katherine, the Green and White captains, and all the campers. Green's victory in the horse show gave them a brief lead only to fall behind to white again after the swim meet. The Apache race will once again be the deciding event to determine the end of the color war.
Maintenance
David Wilson, WS
Maintenance has done a fantastic job this year keeping the camp running. When things are broken, they always answer with a rapid response. We all owe maintenance a great deal of gratitude for their superb job throughout the summer.
The Store
Sam Rashin, WS (Writing in New Canaan, CT)
On most days from 12:30 until the five minute lunch warning bell, the store is open. There is a wide variety of items that one can purchase at the camp store. If you are lonely, you can purchase a teddy. Cold? Buy a sweatshirt. Smelly? Get some deodorant. Bad breath? Buy some toothpaste. Bored? Buy an airplane. Want to save your memories of camp? Buy a camera. Once a person purchases an item they must be rung up by Holly, who is constantly reminding the younger campers that five teddy bears and three sweatshirts is in fact too many. The camp store is a fun and necessary part of Camp Shohola's daily routine.
Unfortunately, the camp store is shadowed by the delectable candy-fest called canteen that takes place in the camp store after dinner on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. At these times, all of Camp Shohola runs to the store in order to attain the sugar highs that they have been deprived of since their arrival at Shohola. This long line of sugar-craving campers often goes the entire length of the Rec Hall as each member is salivating while awaiting the candy or ice cream that they wish to purchase. Often times this line is forced to sing and dance while being pelted with water balloons in the hope that one of these children will be selected to skip the rest of the line. Once inside the store, a camper can select the candy or ice cream that they wish to have. After each member of camp has eaten their candy or ice cream, they are supposed to throw their wrappers out, but many of these messy children decide not to, tossing their wrappers on the ground. This often enrages Mark McAuliffe, leading him to give lectures about neatness at muster.
Senior Staff
Glen Kasoff
Camp Shohola has a lot of things that are great about it. I like the events, the fact that you are able to choose your own activities, the kids, but most of all I like the staff members, senior staff in particular. there is Duncan, Sam, Ali, and Adrian. Duncan is the executive director and is good at basketball. Sam is a head counselor and really funny. Ali is the other head counselor and has 2 kids. last, Adrian the assistant director and has a British accent like Simon Cowell. Senior staff is AWESOME!
Lower Office
Eli Cassel, WS
Lower office is definitely an overlooked job. They do the bulk of the behind the scenes work with out which we would all be lost. They spend the day searching for missing kids, and doing whatever else needs doing.
Crayola Man
Charis Barger, Day Camper
Crayola man rocks. He is really good at lighting fires.
Message from the Editor
David Wilson, WS
It's hard to believe that this is my fourth year at Shohola. It seems like just yesterday I was wandering around this camp not knowing who was who or what was what. My first year, I didn't know how I was going to last four weeks in this strange and foreign place, but by the end of that four weeks I didn't know how I was going to last the next eleven months with out it. These four years have afforded me many great friends and memories, of which I am very thankful for. I would like to thank Eli Cassel and Ben Staples for their help in constructing this month's Argus. Also I would like to thank Malcolm Hale for all his help in typing up articles. It isn't easy getting Working Seniors to help with the Argus, but those three were willing to step up with out much persuasion. In addition to the Working Seniors, Tom Gibson provided a great deal of aid to this project, as well as Sam Stein who helped with copying. Making the Argus is by no means a simple process, but with the help of all whom I've mentioned, plus those campers who wrote articles, it becomes much easier.
Green Speech
Joe Polinger, WS
When I first came to Camp Shohola in cabin two, I didn't understand what color wars was. As a matter of fact, it seemed kind of stupid to me, and I didn't really want to participate in any of the events. By cabin 4 it was just a fun thing that you do at camp, and I just laughed and played along with it. It wasn't until cabin 11 when it hit me that Green and White is actually a really important thing to the camp. From then on, it became my goal to be green captain in my working senior year, but I never actually thought it would happen. This year has not been my most spirited I have to say, but I have seen some amazing things. I saw many kids just rise up and show how hard they could work and that they understand that the color wars are a strong part of, if not one of the foundations of Camp Shohola. I want to thank all the great kids on my team who screamed their hearts out for our team, and to thank the entire white team for being such good sports throughout my captaining experience. Thank you to my co-captains who, without their help, I could never have pulled anything together. Without them I would have just been a mess, so thank you Ben Staples and Malcolm Hale. I want to thank Aaron Insler, for not only being a good rival captain, but for being a friend of mine as well, all the way back to cabin two. Thank you Mark McAuliffe for setting everything up and making it all possible, and thanks to all the staff here who have worked all summer to make sure that everybody is happy and having a good summer. But anyways, Green and White isn't just about beating your rival at a competition. It's more than that. Color wars push every camper to be the best they can be and see things inside themselves that they would never have discovered before. It brings campers together and shows them how to work as a team. I know I'm going to take lessons I've learned in color wars onward into my life. Looking back, I don't think there was really one minute here where I truly didn't want to be here. camp has helped shape me into who I am today, and whether or not I'm back next year, I hope that color wars and Camp Shohola maintains its value to anybody else who comes to camp. So Thank You Duncan, and thank you Camp Shohola. I hope to see you next year and I hope to get the chance to help another camper share the same wonderful experience I got to have here.
White Speech
Aaron Insler, WS
Ever since my first year at Shohola, green and white color war events have always been the highlight of my summer. To me, there was no greater satisfaction than walking in to the banquet hall, as a champion, through the warm congratulating handshakes of the opposing team, as some of you did here tonight. I hope that many, if not all of you, felt the same sense of accomplishment that I did, and as you descended the steps towards the dining hall, you recalled some of your fondest memories from this summer's color war, and you felt proud of what you have accomplished. Because, all of you, without exception, both teams, have accomplished something great. This summer's competition has been the fiercest, most passionate, hard fought, and closest that I can remember over my 7 summers at camp. As a captain, that is all you can ask for of your team. You can only hope that what you see from each competitor is his best, that he can give nothing more for his team. I want to thank each and every one of you because, as our close scoring shows, this is exactly what happened. Looking back at the entire summer, and the memories that I saw as I walked into the dining hall, this is one of the only summers in which I see nothing where I could have asked somebody to run a little faster, or try a little harder, and that is perfect. To steal a line from Friday Night Lights,
"Being Perfect is not about winning, it's not about that scoreboard out there. It's about you and your friends. Being perfect means to be able to look your friends in the eye, and know that you didn't let them down."
This summer's color war was perfect, and I have many people to thank for that. First, Mark McAuliffe deserves a mammoth ovation for the incredible effort he puts into Green and White. Along with Mark, Kevin Wright has done a fantastic job as well. I would like to thank Eric Green, Joe Polinger, Malcolm Hale, and the Green team for a fun filled, fantastic fight, well done. My Co-captains have done a great job to help me out in every way, Matt Seskin, Sam Rashin, and David Wilson. Your counselors all helped tremendously in making the summer go so smoothly, but most importantly, all of you are the ones who deserve the credit, because you are the ones who gave it your all, and fought. All of you, green and white, thanks so much, you were perfect.
