Kids Riflery Camp

By Noah Meissner, cabin 16

I have taken riflery every year I have been at Camp Shohola and it’s always a lot of fun. We start off learning basic rules for safety on the shooting range. Some of the important rules are: always point a gun in a safe direction, remember that a gun is not a toy, don’t point a gun at someone as a joke, and that a gun is always loaded. Another rule is that if you shoot an animal you have to eat it. After learning rules and basic techniques, we start shooting. Out initial goal is to have a good grouping. Then, we work on centering our shots on the bulls-eye. But riflery isn’t all work. We also have a lot of fun shooting cans. In my opinion, riflery is one of the best courses offered at Camp Shohola.

Riflery is one of the most exciting activities Shohola has to offer. When the class begins we sit on the dark brown wooden benches waiting eagerly for our chance to shoot. When the instructor tells you it is your turn to shoot you step up to one of the four guns and lay down beside it. Next, you put on the safety goggles and earmuffs. The instructor hands you five bullets. When he gives the command to fire you put a bullet into the chamber and fire at the target, sometimes soda cans. In my opinion, riflery is the most fun activity.

Riflery class this year was awesome. We got to shoot targets, and my best score was 27. We also got to shoot other stuff like cans and apples. I didn't get to shoot my shirt, but I got to shoot my hat which was pretty cool. Turtle let us shoot his book and we completely ripped it up. He also found a cardboard cereal box and we shot that as well. I also met a lot of new kids and made new friends. I think riflery class was great.
