Special Summer Camp Activities
Throughout the summer, there are also special summer camp activities
that occur at different intervals.
Here
are some of them:
Canteen:
Three nights
a week, the camp store is open for a camper to get a candy bar or an
ice
cream. The store is
also open daily for
necessities like bug spray, toothpaste, batteries etc.
Campfire: Every
Sunday night we have campfire. During
this time we’ll sing some traditional Shohola songs, play some funny
games or
skits, give out the awards for camper of the week, and then close with
a story
as it gets dark.
Cookout: Every
Wednesday cabins get together at a designated location to cook dinner
for
themselves over a charcoal fire.
Dances: Every Tuesday
night we have dances with Netimus, our sister camp.
Green and White Events:
Also known as color war, each camper is a
member of either the green
team or the white team. Competitions
happen each week and the winner is not known until the banquet at the
end of
the summer. Competitions
include
Olympics day, the Apache Race, the Counselor Hunt, the Quiz, the
Mystery
Marathon and more.
International Food Night:
During international food night we celebrate
the fact that Shohola has
campers and counselors from all over the world.
Groups of people from other countries will get
together and cook a food
that is typical of their culture and share it with everyone. Our international food
night normally
features food from the likes of Hungary, the Czech Republic, England,
Australia,
Mexico, Spain, and of course the great nation of Philly.
Klondike Day and Carnival:
So special that it only takes place once every
two years. During
Klondike Day each cabin dresses like
miners in an old gold mining town.
Then
they race to the creek to mine their gold and bring it to the bank for
money. They can
spend their money that
afternoon as the Hill is converted into a country carnival.
Special
days like superhero day, hat day, poetry day, bad
joke day and more happen all the time, just to keep things interesting.
Yankees Baseball Game:
Twice per summer we head out to see the
Yankees AAA affiliate the Wilkes-Barre
Scranton Yankees. Kids
load up on junk
food, scream a lot, have a great time and then watch the fantastic
fireworks
display at the end of the evening.
It’s
a perfect summer night.
Banquet: Finally, to
wrap up the summer, we decorate the dining hall, have the counselors
dress up
and wait the tables and serve a wonderful meal to celebrate all that
has gone
on for the previous seven weeks. An
awards ceremony caps off the evening and the winner of the summer-long
green
and white competition is named.
