Summer may be almost over, but we are always thinking about next year! 2017 has been the best summer yet because at Camp Shohola, we make sure to spend the majority of our time, outside! We make sure to limit access to technology and provide alternative activities that encourage the campers to get outside at our overnight camp near New York!

You may not realize it, but there are a lot of health and metal benefits that come along with children spending time outside. It is our priority to keep your child physically and mentally engaged in order to keep them happy and active. Some of the benefits from spending time outside, during the summertime, include:

  • Relieves Stress - After almost nine months inside of a classroom, your child may feel drained. At school, children are often left feeling stressed and pressured to do well. By spending time outside at overnight camp, children get a much-needed break and time to relax, as well as reduce stress. 
  • Exercise - At overnight camp, children will have an opportunity to select from a range of overnight camp activities. Camp Shohola offers a variety of land sports, water sports, outdoor adventures, equestrian, communication & technology, and arts. Children will participate in five different activities on a typical day at overnight camp, keeping them active. These days, many children spend too much time in front of the TV or computer screen, when they should be getting more exercise.
  • Socialization - Spending time outside gives children the perfect opportunity to interact with peers. At overnight camp, children will have plenty of time to go outside to hang out with friends or practice a new skill with our overnight camp staff. Spending time in nature can lead to improvements in a child’s social development. Children become more aware of personal and social developments and learn how to better interact with others.
  •  Vitamin D - Many children are experiencing in Vitamin D deficiencies, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.  These benefits of Vitamin D include preventing future bone problems, diabetes, heart disease, and more! By spending just 10-15 minutes outside in the sun, your children will receive a daily dose of Vitamin D, and what better place to do that than overnight camp?
