Why New Jersey Families Choose Camp Shohola

About 2 to 3 hours from most of New Jersey. Camp is about 90 miles from New York City.

Boys-only and small on purpose. We average 120 to 150 campers and 80 staff. Eight to ten boys live in each cabin with two or three counselors. We are big enough to offer a full program but small enough to get to know your son personally.

Led by the same family since 1943. Director Duncan Barger is the third generation of his family to run Shohola and has directed camp since 2002. Our senior staff together have more than 75 years at Shohola.

A real break from screens. Campers unplug from technology, other than instructional technology, and spend their summer outdoors and with each other.

A Summer Your Son Designs Himself

Each camper chooses ten instructional activities for his session, and swimming is required for everyone. Activities meet three times a week, with five activity periods a day, so boys get steady instruction in the skills they pick. See how it fits together on a typical day at camp.

  • Land Sports: Basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, archery and more. As a member of the Pike County Camp Athletic Association, Shohola fields teams against other camps in the region. In intramurals, every boy plays in every game.
  • Watersports: Swimming, sailing and kayaking on Lake Greeley, plus waterskiing, wakeboarding and tubing at our property on Lake Wallenpaupack.
  • Outdoor Adventure: A ropes and initiative course, rafting on the Lehigh and Youghiogheny Rivers, canoeing and kayaking on the Delaware and Lackawaxen Rivers, and hiking and rock-climbing trips in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.
  • Equestrian: English horseback riding instruction for campers of every experience level.
  • CommTech: Photography, video production, radio, sports broadcasting, electronics and computer programming. The program includes our licensed amateur radio station, WB3DGR.
  • Arts: Pottery, woodworking, painting and theater.
  • Evening and Special Programs: Campfires, themed events and group activities.
